MCE's skiers at Engadin Ski Marathon

Missing Children Europe is delighted to announce that, for the sixth year running, there will be an MCE ski team participating in the Engadin Ski Marathon (ESM). The ESM is a well-known international cross country skiing event which takes place in Switzerland's spectacular Engadin valley and attracts every year over 12,000 participants.

We encourage every skier to look for sponsors in order to raise donations. These donations are integral to MCE's mission to protect and empower missing children and thereby to the success of the skiing for Missing Children Europe event. We will provide skiers with all the necessary material to do so.

So why not ski for a good cause next year? If that sounds too daunting, you can also sponsor a skier.

Whichever option you choose, you will be making an important contribution to the work of Missing Children Europe. With your support, we can make a real difference to the plight of missing and sexually abused children throughout Europe.

So, here's how you can help.

SKIERS : Want to join the team ?

Eligibility : The event is open to everyone over the age of 16. Participants include some professionals and even Olympic athletes, but mainly consist of enthusiastic amateurs who just want the opportunity to enjoy the challenge of a terrific sporting event in breathtaking surroundings ! Training : Some training is advised, but there are no specific fitness requirements. Classic cross-country skiing is easy to learn (it takes just a few hours) and skiers are encouraged to complete the event at their own pace. The average speed for a beginner is slightly faster than walking pace.

For further information see : www.engadin-skimarathon.ch

Accommodation : Missing Children Europe has pre-booked hotel rooms and backpackers accommodation at the Randolins Hotel (www.randolins.ch), just outside Saint-Moritz village.

To make your reservation, click here. As the number of beds allocated to the team is limited, please confirm your room reservation and pay the deposit before December 15th. Of course, participants can also make their own arrangements but we strongly recommend booking early !

Travel to the Engadin Valley :
By car: Saint Moritz is situated in the Southern part of Switzerland, about two hours' drive from Zürich, Milano and Bergamo, 9 hours' drive from Brussels and Paris.
By air, via Zürich: Brussels-Zürich flights operated by Swissair and Brussels; Paris-Zürich flights operated by Swissair and Air France. Trains are available from Zürich airport to Saint Moritz (2 connections).
By air, via Italy: Ryanair flights from Charleroi to Bergamo and from Beauvais to Bergamo; Easyjet flights from Zaventem to Milano, from Orly to Milano Linate, from Roissy-Charles de Gaulle to Milano Malpensa.

How you can raise funds to support our work for missing and abused children throughout Europe

Raising donations : there are several ways you can raise money for missing children:

  • Either by making a personal donation,
  • Or by organizing a personal fundraising event: i.e on the occasion of a dinner, a party, ask your friends to replace flowers or chocolates by a donation to MCE; organize a tennis competition, a bridge tournament, a tombola…
  • Or by contacting your personal or professional network explaining why you are involved in the marathon and asking them to support your efforts by contributing to MCE's action with a donation.

Missing Children Europe partners with the fundraising platform GivenGain (www.givengain.com) ; we encourage each skier to create an Activist page on GivenGain in order to facilitate their fundraising (www.givengain.com/activists/projects).

If you do not wish to become an online activist, we will provide you with a letter or cover email with all relevant information about MCE's project and a link to make an online donation, to be sent to your contacts.

Registration

Step 1 : Register as a member of the MCE ski team.

Please register here to sign up as a member of the 2014 MCE ski team. As indicated above it is open to people of all ages and fitness levels and there is a choice of 21 or 42 km. The fact that many of our team members return year after year should tell you that it is a great experience !

Once you have signed up we will provide you with all the information you need to secure your participation.

Please note that you will need to cover your own expenses (registration fee, transport and accommodation). In this way, all sponsorship money raised by you goes directly to MCE's projects. This is emphasized in all communication to potential donors and sponsors.

Step 2: Register on the official Engadin Ski Marathon website:

www.engadin-skimarathon.ch (red button top left of the page "Inscription en ligne")

We advise you to register before December 31st as the registration fees increase on January, 1st, on February 1st and on March 1st.

DONORS: Want to support a skier?

The skiers register for a full marathon (42km) or a half marathon (21km), depending on their level of fitness and experience. You can sponsor either a skier or the whole team by visiting the team page and clicking on their picture. All donations are welcome, large or small. Given that the skiers cover their own expenses, you can be sure that all the money you donate goes directly to MCE's projects for missing and sexually exploited children in Europe.

How is the money raised used?

A child is reported missing every 2 minutes in Europe. Expansion of the network of the 116 000 European Hotline for missing children is crucial to prevent, protect and empower these children.

The 116 000 European Hotline for missing children is currently operational in 27 European countries : Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and United Kingdom. 2 more hotlines will be operational in March 2014 : Lithuania and Sweden.

Thanks to the efforts of our ski team, we will raise funds that will help us continue our work on the
116 000 hotlines for missing children: the funds will be used to develop a tailored software for the operators of the hotline. This software will considerably strengthen the functioning and cooperation of the hotlines, by providing them with a solid backbone to manage cases of parents and children in need.
